What is the Group of Eight?
The Group of Eight is Australia’s counterpart to the UK’s Russell Group. Member universities share a focus on research intensity, doctoral training and industry partnerships. They collectively train the majority of Australia’s academic researchers and receive the largest share of government research grants.
All eight admit international students for undergraduate and postgraduate study. ANU in Canberra is the only capital without a large commercial city, making it quieter but with strong graduate employment in public policy and government sectors.
Best universities for engineering
UNSW Sydney is Australia’s top engineering school by QS Subject Rankings 2026, with specific strengths in petroleum, mining and software engineering. Its graduate employment rate for engineers exceeds 90% within six months.
Monash University runs Australia’s oldest engineering faculty and maintains co-op programmes with Siemens, Ford and BHP. Its Clayton campus in Melbourne is purpose-built for engineering research.
Best universities for medicine
Australia’s medical degrees are highly regarded internationally. University of Melbourne and University of Sydney both rank in the QS global Medicine top 40. Key facts for international applicants:
- Graduate-entry medicine (4 years) is more common than undergraduate entry (6 years)
- GAMSAT or MCAT required for graduate-entry programmes
- International student places are limited — typically 20–30% of cohort
Does ranking affect the 485 Post-Study Work visa?
No. The Department of Home Affairs evaluates 485 visa applications based on degree level, study location in Australia, age (under 50) and English proficiency — not institution ranking. The work visa duration depends on degree type:
- Bachelor’s (most fields): 2 years
- Master’s in STEM: up to 4 years
- PhD: up to 4 years
