Canada PGWP: Working in Canada After Your Degree (2026)
The Post-Graduation Work Permit is Canada’s signature immigration advantage — an open work permit with no employer restriction for up to 3 years. It consistently ranks as one of the best post-study work policies in the world.
What is the PGWP?
An open work permit meaning:
- Work for any employer
- In any occupation
- Anywhere in Canada
- No Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) required
This contrasts with employer-specific work permits, which tie you to one employer and require complex sponsorship.
PGWP duration
| Programme length | PGWP duration |
|---|---|
| Less than 8 months | Not eligible |
| 8 months to less than 2 years | Equal to programme length |
| 2 years or more | 3 years |
A 3-year bachelor’s degree = 3-year PGWP. A 2-year college diploma = 3-year PGWP. A 1-year graduate certificate = 1-year PGWP.
Strategy tip: A two-year programme at a PGWP-eligible institution gives the full three-year PGWP — same as a four-year degree but cheaper.
Eligibility changes (2024)
IRCC updated PGWP eligibility in 2024. Key changes:
- Master’s graduates: eligible from all designated public universities
- College graduates: eligible from programmes in specific high-demand fields (agriculture, healthcare, STEM, trade)
- Private institutions: eligibility narrowed; verify before applying

From PGWP to permanent residence
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry requires:

- Sufficient French or English proficiency (CLB 7 for TEER 0/1, CLB 5 for TEER 2/3)
- Filing an Express Entry profile and receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
With 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada, CEC applicants typically receive ITAs in Express Entry draws targeting CEC-only candidates.
