How Does the Common App Work for International Students? (2026)
What is the Common Application?
The Common App (commonapp.org) allows international students to apply to 1,000+ US universities with a single application. You fill in personal details, academics, activities and essays once — then select which schools to send it to. Each school may also ask supplemental questions.
Application structure
The Common App has several sections:
- Profile — personal details, nationality, date of birth
- Family — parents’ education and occupation
- Education — school attended, grades/GPA, class rank if applicable
- Tests — SAT/ACT scores (if required by the school)
- Activities — up to 10 extracurricular activities with descriptions
- Writing — the main essay (650 words max) and any supplements
- Recommendations — teacher and school counsellor letters
The main essay
Seven prompts; you choose one:
- Background, identity or talent that has shaped you
- Obstacle, setback or failure and what you learned
- A belief or idea you challenged and why
- Problem you’ve solved or want to solve
- An accomplishment or realisation
- Topic that captivates you intellectually
- Any topic of your choice
For international applicants: prompt 1 (background/identity) and prompt 2 (challenge) are most commonly chosen. Admissions officers appreciate cultural context, but avoid making your essay a generic “I came from a different culture” narrative.
ED vs EA vs RD
| Application type | Binding? | Typical deadline | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I (ED I) | Yes | November 1 | Highest acceptance rates |
| Early Decision II (ED II) | Yes | January 1 | Second chance at ED advantage |
| Early Action (EA) | No | November 1–15 | Earlier decision, no commitment |
| Regular Decision (RD) | No | January 1–15 | Compare offers |
International students and ED: Be cautious with binding ED if you need to compare financial aid packages. Some universities guarantee to meet demonstrated need but you should confirm this before committing.
Schools that don’t use Common App
- University of California system (own portal: UC Apply)
- MIT (own portal)
- Georgetown (own portal)
- University of Texas (Apply Texas)
Some schools use Coalition App or Scoir as alternatives to the Common App. Always verify before the deadline.
